PFAS – in accordance with Article 5 PPWR

Compliance from 2026 onwards

Under the PPWR, PFAS content in packaging will only be permitted up to a certain limit from 12 August 2026 onwards. Only packaging that does not exceed this limit will remain marketable in the EU. The German minimum standard already classifies PFAS in PE and PP films as incompatible with recycling from January 2026 onwards. You will find relevant background information below.

Consequences & Effects

Within the framework of the REACH Regulation, the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) has been working on a PFAS ban for some time. Currently, the PPWR for packaging is considered the authoritative regulatory mechanism. Until the publication of the legal text in January 2025, there was no clarity regarding the permissible limit values. Against the backdrop of globalised raw material supply and the market-standard disposition of packaging materials, the current time frame is considered impractical. The complete removal of PFAS components from the material flows of the recycling industry can only be achieved in the long term. Of course, compliance with the requirements of the PPWR is currently the order of the day.
